WAUKESHA, WI - We are covering breaking news out of Waukesha, Wisconsin where a Red SUV barreled down parade goers. At 4:39 PM on November 21 at Gasper Ave and Main Street a Red SUV drove through barricades headed westbound. It struck nearly 40 people and there are 5 confirmed fatalities at this time.
Mayor Sean Riley called it a horrible senseless tragedy. He walked in the parade early on and remembers seeing smiling children and their parents who came together to celebrate community. He is deeply saddened by this senseless act. His heart goes out to all those affected, injured, and to the families and witnesses of those who lost loved ones. He thanks those who sprung into action and prays for all those involved. He went on to say that he thanks all the departments that responded and mentioned that the federal government has already reached out to help if they can. He prays that the community will find healing.
Police Chief Daniel Thomas stated that they are still working on notifying families so at this time he does not have a specific number of fatalities or injuries and says it is still an active investigation. One officer who has been with the department for 6 and a half years discharged a weapon at the red SUV but no one was injured. Many people were transported by police, fire, EMS, as well as families to local hospitals. They are no longer looking for a subject vehicle and have someone in custody but it is still an active scene. He thanks all law enforcement that helped and stated that it is unknown if this was related to terrorism. The scene is secure and safe and they will continue to investigate.
Finally, Fire Chief Steve Howard took the podium. He says that his department was in the parade and as soon as they heard reports come in on radio he immediately had 5 stations responding. They activated their mass casualty protocols and used a Mavis Box Alarm to call for a 2nd Alarm. The 5 stations of Waukesha responded as well as 12 other local stations. They transported 11 adult patients and 12 pediatric patients to local hospitals.
It was asked if the shelter in place order is still in effect and the mayor say it was not. It was put in place to keep the community away so the scene could be investigated. At this time there are no reports of shots fired from the Red SUV.
This is a fluid situation and we will continue to follow it. To watch the entire press conference from WCIA 3 visit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeiBt9MK6PE.
