Jim lived life to the fullest. He was first and foremost a family man, “Papaw”, and a great friend. He loved spending time with people at the Smith Annual Labor Day Cookout, or other celebrations large or small. He enjoyed every minute of being with his large family and circle of friends and was grateful for the good times spent together in this life. A houseful of grandkids on any occasion made him the happiest man on the planet.
He participated in numerous sports including basketball, softball, bowling, and golf. His favorite was pitching in softball games, using his exceptional pitching skills to shut down opposing teams. He could pitch a softball like a professional, shoot the 3-point shot and throw horseshoes with the best around. He always brought a smile and a competitive spirit and passion that was contagious to all around him. Other past-times included fishing with friends and grandchildren, golfing with buddies, spirited backyard volleyball games with family, and playing a good game of cards well into the night.
He worked for the railroad as a machine operator until his retirement. Jim was a life-long Chicago White Sox fan and Bears fan. He also loved Notre Dame football and basketball. Jim and Sandy were dedicated Notre Dame Basketball season ticket holders for many years, rarely missing a game. Jim cheered on all his teams faithfully through thick and thin.
Jim loved being outside on hot summer days riding his mower, gardening, and listening to good music. A celebration of life will be planned at a later date when all can gather to celebrate a life well lived.
