More than 90 people were killed by more than 30 tornadoes were reported across at least five states Friday night and early Saturday morning. In Kentucky, one tornado stayed on the ground for more than 200 miles.
At least 50 people died in Kentucky, with the toll likely to rise, according to Gov. Andy Beshear. There were also confirmed fatalities in Edwardsville, Ill., where the roof of an Amazon warehouse partially collapsed.
In Mayfield, Ky., one of the hardest-hit areas, a tornado tore through a candle factory southwest of town, ripped the clock tower off the county courthouse, and caused widespread damage. Damage was reported to the northeast, where a church’s roof was blown off.
The tornadoes were part of a weather system that was wreaking havoc in many parts of the country and hit Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri and Tennessee. More than 200,000 customers were without power as of Saturday morning according to reports compiled by PowerOutage.us.
