Stray bullet found in a South Bend city building

A bullet was found in South Bend’s City-County Building, just a few offices down from the mayor’s office. The bullet was discovered on the floor after entering the building and bouncing around, hitting the ceiling at one point.

“We’ve had penetration through the roof. We’ve never had penetration actually come into the complex itself,” said Brian Davidson, head of building maintenance, talking to WNDU-TV.

Caled Bauer, City Communications director, said the bullet was found about 25 feet from the mayor’s office.

“We don’t know for sure when this bullet came into the building. But, assuming it was around midnight on New Year’s Eve, so thankfully, no one was here,” he said.

The bullet was discovered Tuesday when people came back to work.

“It’s crazy for anything like this to happen in South Bend, just not here because we work here, but all around town,” said Derek Dieter, one of the county commissioners.

“I don’t know how much other damage there is around town. I don’t know how much other damage was done to business and residential. I know parents take their kids in the basement, which, that is ridiculous,” said Dieter.
